Frequently Asked Questions

The Tamaskan Dog Diversity Project wants to be open and honest with everyone interested in learning what this project is about. We know that there can be any number of questions about what we are trying to do past just who we are and what our goals are. To combat misinformation, assumptions, and answer common questions, we have assembled this F.A.Q page. If you have a question for us, please contact us!

About the TDDP

What is the Tamaskan Dog Diversity Project?

The Tamaskan Dog Diversity Project (TDDP) is a breed specific project that is working in cooperation with Embark orther organizations, clubs, and breed diversity projects to develop a plan, database, and sharable information based off testing as many Tamaskan Dogs as possible.

The intent is to use the results to develop a sound, science-based, database and breeding tool that can be used to better develop and ensure healthy and consistent, fact-based development of the breed. We feel that by creating a clear and unbiased picture of the breed, their genetic traits and a whole and of individual dogs we can make significant advances in the breed's development.

Testing and Kits

Why Embark?

Embark is the current leader in genetic testing for dogs. Not only do they have the largest database of samples, but they are currently partnered with Cornell University and involved in a number of research and developmental programs and projects to help us to better understand dog DNA and genetic traits.

There are other tests out there, but not as inclusive and passionate as Embark. They have been involved in other breed development projects and so we took the first step to contact them about starting a similar project for the Tamaskan Dog breed. Using the Doberman Diversity Project and their joint project as a starting place, we want to pursue a similar project and Embark has offered us their resources, assistance and guidance in this process while simultaneously allowing us an opportunity to have breeders and pet homes alike the equal chance to test for traits, diseases, and characteristics that can help Tamaskans live longer, fuller lives.

Breeder & Pups

Which breeders may participate in the TDDP?
If you are a registered breeder with any of our approved registries (Tamaskan Dog Register, Tamaskan Germany, Nederlandse Tamaskan Club, Interessengemeinschaft Tamaskan, International Tamaskan Register, UK TDR) we have a special set of forms and ordering process just for you. Check out your very own page.

Do we receive different services/testing?

While some other DNA analysis companies alter their product based off of the purchaser's location due to patent and copyrights, Embark has gone through the necessary steps to be able to offer all of their services to anyone who uses their services.

Because the TDDP is an independent organization based in the United States, we are not only allowed to purchase Embark kits on the behalf of others, but we can also offer our services, research, and data internationally as well.
